Doch welche Beweggründe trieben Cicero wirklich zu Pompeius? Hoffte er tatsächlich auf ein „Duumvirat auf der Grundlage einer Verbindung mit Pompeius, der Verbindung zwischen „Feder" und „Schwert"", wie es ihm der russische Forscher Uttschenko unterstellte, oder verfolgte Cicero andere Ziele?
Diese Arbeit untersucht die Entwicklung der Beziehung Ciceros zu Pompeius, wozu zunächst die Lebensläufe beider Personen auf Verbindungspunkte untersucht werden, um an diesen den Verlauf ihrer Zusammenarbeit näher zu beleuchten und schließlich anhand dieses Verlaufs ein differenziertes Bild von Ciceros Absichten in Bezug auf seine Beziehung zu Pompeius zu erhalten.
